This care inevitably requires the input of a GP with support from other community based services such as a palliative care team and community nurses. Supporting and encouraging GPs to offer or continue providing palliative care is not only important for individual patients and their families but for the health system and the whole community.
All Australians should be supported to consider and be provided with the opportunity to specify the type of care they would like to receive at the end of life.
These online End-of-Life Care modules, produced by GP Partners Australia, aims to build the capacity and skills of General Practitioners in caring for adults with a progressive life limiting illness and provides a framework for patient ‘shared care’ with Specialist Palliative Care Services in metropolitan and peri-urban Adelaide to assist in addressing this.
